Who We Are

The Black Hawk Pipes & Drums is a performance and teaching band proudly based in the Quad Cities, straddling the scenic border between Illinois and Iowa. For more than 25 years, we’ve been filling parades, festivals, and concert halls across the Midwest with the unmistakable sound of the Great Highland bagpipe and Scottish drum corps — that bold, spine-tingling music that stirs the soul (and occasionally startles the neighbors).

Our mission is simple but heartfelt: to preserve, celebrate, and share our Celtic heritage through music, community, and education. We believe that the power and beauty of traditional Scottish music shouldn’t be locked away in history books — it should be heard, seen, and experienced. That’s why you’ll find us marching proudly through parades, performing on stage with other Celtic music groups, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder at community events, keeping these timeless traditions alive.

A Band for Everyone

At Black Hawk Pipes & Drums, we welcome anyone with an interest in learning — no matter your age, background, or experience level. Whether you’re drawn to the stirring wail of the bagpipe, the rhythm of the snare, or the deep heartbeat of the bass drum, you’ll find a home here among friends.

We believe music should be shared, not sold — which is why our lessons are completely free. Yes, you read that right. Free. No tuition, no fees, no fine print. Our members volunteer their time to teach because we love what we do and want to pass it on. Some of our best players started as total beginners who simply showed up with curiosity and courage (and maybe a pair of earplugs for their family at home).

What We Do

Over the years, the Black Hawk Pipes & Drums has become a familiar sight — and sound — across the Midwest. You’ll spot our kilts at parades, Highland games, veterans’ ceremonies, community festivals, and even as opening acts for Celtic music groups. Whether we’re leading a parade down Main Street or performing in a quiet memorial service, we play with pride, precision, and a deep respect for the traditions we represent.

We’re more than just performers — we’re ambassadors of Celtic culture. Through music, we connect people to a shared sense of history, pride, and celebration. From the haunting solo notes of “Amazing Grace” to the full, thunderous roar of a pipe band in perfect step, every performance is a chance to bring that heritage to life.

More Than Music

What keeps us going after 25 years isn’t just the music — it’s the community. Our band is a family. We practice together, perform together, and support one another both on and off the field. We’ve got pipers, drummers, learners, veterans, and newcomers — all united by a shared love of this incredible tradition and the joy it brings to others.

And when the music stops, we still stick around — sharing laughs, stories, and the occasional post-parade meal (or pint). Being part of the Black Hawk Pipes & Drums isn’t just about learning an instrument — it’s about finding your place in something bigger, louder, and livelier than you ever imagined.

Join Us

If you’ve ever felt a spark when you hear the skirl of the pipes or the rhythm of a marching drumline — consider this your invitation. Come to a practice. Meet the band. See what it’s all about. You don’t need to know how to read music or have any experience; we’ll teach you everything you need to know.

Whether you dream of leading a parade, playing at a festival, or simply learning a unique instrument steeped in history, the Black Hawk Pipes & Drums welcomes you. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm (and maybe a sense of humor — we like to have fun while we play).

After all, our band has lasted for more than two decades not just because of the music we play, but because of the people who come together to make it.

What We Wear

The centerpiece of our uniform is our kilt in the Black Watch tartan. Our standard kit includes sporran, belt,  green hose and red flashes. In the summer, we wear a blue polo, and in the winter we have a red polo with a band sweater. For those fancy gigs, we sport a white dress shirt, black vest, and red tie. For all occasions we top it off with our traditional glengarry and cap badge.
